He studied economics in Mainz, Glasgow and Hamburg and started working as a volunteer journalist at Georg von Holtzbrinck school afterwards. His first professional experiences included working as an editor at Wirtschaftswoche and manager magazin, where he reported about business, politics and technology trends. In 1999 Steffen joined “Financial Times Deutschland”, which published its first issue in February 2000. In 2003 Steffen returned to manager magazin, working temporary as deputy editor-in-chief. FTD appointed him as editor-in-chief in 2004 and he held the same position at “Capital” in 2009. “Financial Times Deutschland” was taken off the market in 2013. Steffen returned to manager magazin as editor-in-chief.
